Chazan Greg Hurvitz


Greg was born in South Africa , Schooled in Johannesburg at King David Schools and then Kimberley at Kimberley Boys High. He started singing in Shule's from the age of 10. He had his Barmitzvah at the Benoni UHI, East of Johannesburg where he returned to be the Chazzan in 1997 until 1999.

He then sang at Pine Street Shule and toured Australia as a member of the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir in 1999, chairing this choir in 2004. 

In 2002 he was asked to join the then World renowned Sydenham Shul Choir under Chazzan Oshy Tugendhaft and Choirmaster Jose Stern, touring USA, Canada and England numerous times. Greg conducted the Sydenham choir in 2013 and then made the move to Full time Choirmaster of Great Park Synangogue from end of 2013 to end of 2016 singing as Chazan when Rabbi Hazdan was unavailable.

The Hurvitz Family moved to Melbourne in January of 2017. Greg sang with the Central Shule Choir in 2017 and joined SCHC in 2019. 

Greg credits his knowledge and appreciation of Nusach and davening to Chazzonim Oshy Tugendhaft and Salitan as well as to Choirmasters Gus Levy (z'l) and Jose Stern.

Chazzan Greg is married to Nicole and has 3 chilren Shaliah, Avi'el and Daniella.
